Started as a direct response to the passage of Amendment 2 an anti-gay-rights amendment passed by Colorado voters but later overturned by the U. Supreme Court five years ago, the festival has become a fixture on the Springs theater scene. Moreover, says Babin, the event has helped educate the public, both straight and gay. A lot of straight people have come to see the festival, and I think, for some of them, their whole perception of gay people has turned around.
Art has a way of moving people, and theater definitely has that power. I've got gay friends, but I don't know a lot about them,? I didn't realize how hard it was being gay ,? You have the same problems - I didn't know that gay people fought with their mothers, just like we do.? That's the cool thing about it - it's a reminder about the common humanity of all people.
Claudia Wolf, pastor of Pueblo's Metropolitan Community Church, which has a predominantly gay congregation, applauds the festival's decision to head south for a weekend. It's a chance for people to say,? Hey, look - they're talking about my lifestyle and my experiences.? It's another chance to let people know that we're there, and we're not going away. For Babin, the podium and stage represented ideal outlets for his creativity. As a boy growing up on a farm in Southeastern Colorado, he knew he was different than the other tractor jockeys. Since he wasn't very good at sports, he joined the speech club in high school and began honing his elocution skills.
By the time he left college, he was determined to pursue an acting career in Colorado Springs. So we kept going. And 10 years later, we're still going strong. Although the Upstart Performing Ensemble performs gay-oriented material, Babin stresses that the actors are a mix of straights and gays.
In this year's festival, more than half of the company is straight, he says. They do study, though. And they're learning more about what it's like to be gay. The festival features a variety of works, from serious and thought-provoking to light and comedic, Babin says. But most of all, he guarantees it'll be something different for local theater-goers.
